Downe House School near Newbury was established as a girls' boarding school in 1907. The school occupies extensive grounds and offers a wide range of facilities to over 550 pupils. It was agreed that an LC500C Load Compensation Control (formerly known as a 'Savastat') would be installed in the Garden House to conduct a comparative trial before considering installations throughout the school properties.

A Sime boiler fitted with pressure jet burner provides heating both to the school's lecture rooms and communal areas, and this was chosen as the target plant. The LC500C, which features and integrated 'hours run meter', was installed on the heating boiler, and burner activity was then recorded daily with the unit on and off line on alternating days for a period of sixteen days: nine days on line and seven days off. The 'online' days included a weekend period. All readings were taken by Downe House School maintenance staff.

Result of the trial at the Garden house boiler room, Down House School.

Fuel consumption for the period of the trial was reduced by 19.48%. Following this successful trial, Downe House are fitting the units to a further 25 main heating boilers that consumed over £160K worth of gas at 2007 prices. It is estimated that the return on investment for this energy saving programme will occur in less than a year.
